Do you attempt to control your dog’s weight by diet or by exercise?
It’s a question made more important after a large survey conducted this summer by researchers at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. The answer has a lot to do with the owners themselves.
The survey of nearly 3,300 dog owners in the United States, Canada and Europe showed dogs were more likely to get more exercise if their owners spent more time exercising themselves.
The results also suggested many owners of potentially overweight dogs are trying to control their dog’s weight through diet, but not through exercise.
This is a problem because for a dog to maintain a healthy weight, he or she needs BOTH exercise and an appropriate diet.
So how much exercise does a dog need every day? The American Kennel Club says that depends on the age, health and breed.
Of course, puppies are likely to have more energy than old dogs. And dogs with joint or hip issues can’t handle a strenuous workout.
Breed type matters because some are high-energy, like Border Collies and Jack Russell Terriers. Other breeds are more indolent, like Basset Hounds.
Many sources cite 30 minutes to two hours a day, depending on the above factors.
Exercise isn’t just for weight control and longevity. Exercise can be forum for training, socializing and mental stimulation – all great things for dogs.
They also happen to be pretty good for their owners, too!
