This lovable pug, who loves Cheerios, is a cherished companion of Clara Andrews Anderson of Columbus, Ga.

Cheerios is a favorite snack of Harpo’s. Clara keeps a baggie full on the table next to her chair. She gives Harpo four or five at a sitting, feeding them one at a time. She said Harpo gets “Big Eyes.” Clara calls them “Cheerios Eyes”.

“Harpo” Social Media Star

Clara adopted Harpo as a baby. Now at five years old, Harpo is a social media star. He loves to take photos and he and his mom give pug facts and advice every week for pug owners. Clara says Harpo poses really cute for the photos. Harpo has never been on an official vacation, though he has taken several road trips. He loves to ride in his car seat that attaches to the seatbelt. Clara said they went to a Pugfest in Atlanta once and have gone to see out-of-town friends, but they came home the same day.

Harpo Loves His “Man Cave”

Harpo was already trained when Clara got him. She said he has never had an accident in the house.

Harpo’s kennel is his “Man Cave.” The kennel is always open. Clara used to shut Harpo in the kennel when she first got him, but it was always a positive experience with a treat. It was never used as punishment or as a time out. Harpo still likes to sleep in his kennel at night because his Mommy and Daddy’s bed is very tall and Clara is afraid he may fall off of it. Clara said Harpo’s favorite spot is Mommy’s lap, but his kennel is a close second because it has a very plush bed.

Loves People and Dogs and Has Large Vocabulary

Harpo loves people and other dogs. He has favorite neighbors and he stares at their front door when he goes on his walks, hoping they will come out. Clara said before she retired, Harpo went to a doggy day care. Now he goes once a week to play with his old friends. Harpo loves to walk. Clara and Harpo walk every morning year-round. Clara said Harpo loves to walk, checking and leaving P-mail, and meeting up with other neighborhood doggies.

Harpo barks at the school bus, the mailman, and the FedEx and UPS trucks. Clara said she talks to Harpo all the time and he understands what she is saying. He has a large vocabulary and she has to be careful when she talks about him going to doggie day care. She calls it “school” and has to spell it out because Harpo gets very excited when he hears it.

Currently No Health Issues

Harpo eats Blue Wilderness Chicken Kibble and he gets the wet food version of it once a week. Harpo currently weighs 24.5 pounds and his vet says he is very fit and muscular.

Harpo has no health issues. Clara said she did start giving him a Zyrtec every day this summer because of some allergies and sneezing, at the advice of their vet. Clara does not brush Harpo’s teeth, but she gives him Whimzees and dental chews from her vet to keep his teeth healthy.

Favorite Games Are Backyard Football and Fetch

Harpo sleeps about 8 to 12 hours for every 24 hours and plays 3 to 5 hours a day. Clara said she trusts Harpo to stay home by himself. He has never gotten into anything or torn anything up. He usually just lays in his mommy’s chair or in his Man Cave. Harpo has always worn a harness. Clara said they buy Joyride harnesses (they used to be called Puglife harnesses). She said they were developed specifically for a pug’s body and they are super easy to put on and take off. On their early morning walks, Clara puts a Blinky collar on Harpo so he can be seen by people driving out of their neighborhood.

Harpo’s favorite game is backyard football. Clara throws the football and he fetches it and runs it back to her for a touchdown. Harpo is also a Georgia Bulldog fan so he runs his touchdowns for them too. He also loves to play fetch with his other favorite toys: his lamb chop and lobster. Clara said he likes plush toys with smaller toys inside. He has a log with three squirrels inside, a pumpkin with three bats inside and an Easter egg with three bunnies inside. He takes them out so Clara can put them back inside. This game goes on and on.

Harpo is taken, Ladies!

Clara said that Harpo is married to a pug named Pok, who lives in the Atlanta area. They met at Pugfest. They had an online wedding and a European honeymoon. They text and meet up in Dreamland every day. They also FaceTime from time to time. Harpo has been to visit Pok and they exchange cards and gifts in the mail.

Clara said Harpo loves to swim. The first time he saw a pool, he jumped right in and started swimming like a champ.

“Getting a pug, like any other fur baby, is a commitment,” said Clara. “They do shed, they do snore. They must be housedogs because they cannot tolerate heat or cold.”

Clara says the best thing about a pug is how loving they are.

“They just want to be with you. Plus, they are the cutest!!”

  1. Harpo is a love! Has been since the day I met him, which happens to be the day his mom Clara picked him up! He is very smart and very loving. His excited greeting brings a smile every time I see him! Thanks for sharing my nephew with the world!!

  2. It was so much fun having my boy be Pug of the Month. Candy did a great job on the write-up. Thank you so much for featuring my sweet Harpo.

  4. Harpo is very handsome and I enjoy seeing all of his social media posts and reading what he is up to. Any pup would love to live at Clara’s!

  5. Harpo looks JUST like my boy Meeko, (but he just turned 8 on 9/5) also from N GA!
What breeder did you get him from? I wonder if they came from the same place!!
He’s also a BIG UGA DAWGS fan!! But who’s not right?? 🤣🤣 Meeko also uses the Joy Ride harnesses, as did my other pug. My 1st pug a silver fawn spayed pug, that sadly went to the rainbow 🌈 bridge on 5/21/18. I was devastated, but in my 57 yrs & all the different dogs I’ve owned, I’ve never witnessed another dog grieve her loss the way she did! Even though she was spayed, she took him under her wing & raised him as if he were her own. When he grew up, they were inseparable!!
As devastated as I was I had to pull myself together to help him!! He has paid me back 100-fold. He LITERALLY helped bring me out of a coma, from a car accident where I was hit by an 18 wheeler. The neurosurgeon, didn’t give my family much hope for my survival. If I did he told them I may never come out of the coma, or I’d be a vegetable!! By the Grace of God, Power of Prayer & a little help from my baby, I defied those odds!!

I love reading all of Harpo’s “advice” stories!! He’s such a joy to see!! Keep sending them! I’m sure the educate ppl that may not know some of the info he shares!!
Congrats Harpo, I’m so PROUD for you & your Mom!! You definitely earned this
