All dog owners have seen it – their beloved pooch walking in circles before bedding down for a nap.

Why do they do it? It turns out there are several possible reasons for this merry-go-around behavior. In fact, it’s as natural to them as wagging their tails.

The website LiveScience published an interesting article a few years back entitled “20 Weird Dog and Cat Behaviors Explained by Science.” It’s worth reading if you’ve ever wondered about the strange habits of your pets.

In the article, author Leslie Irvine explained that dogs circling before sleep is a prehistoric “nesting” behavior. It served to drive out snakes, insects and other pests. Perhaps more importantly, dogs are territorial animals – circling is a way to tell others “This is mine!”

We at Pugpalooza are sure there are no snakes in your pooch’s doggie bed. But that isn’t going to stop him or her from doing a few turns before sleep.

Check out the entire LiveScience article below. (It will solve eternal mysteries like why cats hate baths and why dogs sniff each other’s butts.)
