What do I name my dog?
You got the perfect dog. Now, you just need the perfect dog name.
My first suggestion is to meet and spend some time with the dog before you name him/her. My son and I bought an 8-week old pug years ago. We had several cute names picked out, but when we actually met this little pug for this first time, the name her breeder had given her was perfect. It fit her better than any of the names we had picked out.
Of course, every situation will be different. Go see the dog, spend some time with it and you will know whether the dog name you have picked out is perfect… or if you haven’t picked out a name, you will get an idea what name fits the dog.
Pick a name you like
You want to pick a dog name that you like because you will be saying your dog’s name a lot. And, you don’t want to call your dog a certain name for a month or two, then decide you don’t like it. Say the name over and over and make sure you like it and it fits the dog.
Choose a shorter name vs. a longer name
This is a personal preference, but a shorter dog name is just easier to say. If your dog does have a longer name, you can shorten it to some type of nickname- just be sure to be consistent with the name that you use with your dog. He/she will learn their name quickly if you are consistent and you don’t want to confuse your dog by calling it different names.
Also, if you rescue a dog, try not to change his/her name. If you do wish to change it, change it to a name that sounds very familiar to the name they used to have. Dog’s learn their names and they know it. Going to a new home is a wonderful experience, but dogs need some consistency in their life too… and letting a dog keep the name he knows will make the transition easier.
Consider the breed and personality when choosing a name
Consider what breed your dog is and what type of personality they have when choosing your dog’s name. You might just come up with a name that fits perfectly. Try to avoid offensive names or names that might be embarrassing to someone.
You may want to avoid popular dog names, or you may want to use a popular dog name. Some people name their dogs after movie stars, or a place that they have visited or a certain food or drink that they love. Be creative!! Look up different dog names. You’ll find one that is perfect for your dog.

Penelope
Penelope is the pug I have now. When I went to pick out this dog, she already had this name. I knew she was the right pug because of her name. My favorite movie is Criminal Minds and one of my favorite characters is Penelope Garcia. I already had my eye on this pug, but when I heard her name, I knew she was the right dog for me.
