Hi Pug Parents:

This time of year is wonderful. It’s full of joy and giving, happiness and spending time with loved ones. Our pets are family and they love this time of year too. It’s fun for them to see people they don’t normally see everyday.

This time of year, our houses are full of items that are not normally out. Pets are curious.

Here are some tips to keep them safe this year.

** Christmas trees are large and bulky and sometimes pets tend to run around or run under a tree. Try to put your Christmas tree in a corner or a spot that your pet can’t knock it over easily.

** Tinsel is pretty on a tree, but it’s NOT for pets. Make sure if you use tinsel, it is up high enough that your pet cannot reach it. If your pet does eat it, it can cause a blockage in their intestines.

** Christmas lights are pretty and your pet WILL be curious. Make sure they are high enough that your pet cannot chew on the cords. We don’t want them to get shocked!!

**Glass ornaments also need to be out-of-reach for pets. If your pet would knock an ornament off of the tree and it would break and they would try to eat it, your pet could choke on the glass. If swallowed, it could also block their intestines. They can also cut their paws, mouth or other parts of their bodies.

** If you have a real Christmas tree, make sure to keep the needles of the tree off of the floor. Pine needles can cause upset stomach and can irritate or puncture your pet’s intestines if ingested.

** Holly and mistletoe are two necessities this time of year, but they are poisonous to our pets. Poinsettias can also cause nausea and vomiting. Put them in your house, but up high so they are out of reach.

** Every likes edible tree decorations, but make sure your pets don’t see you putting them on your tree. Put them up high so your dog doesn’t knock your tree down trying to get them. They can also be a chocking hazard.

**Everyone loves the smell of a burning candle, but again- put it out of reach of your animals so they don’t knock it off of a coffee table.

**Wrapping paper seems to be an attraction to dogs and pets. Keep wrapping paper, string, ribbon, plastic pieces, etc… off of the floor. They are a chocking hazards and can cause intestinal blockage.

**If you have a live tree in your home, make sure the water stand is covered with something that prohibits your pet from drinking out of it. Pine sap mixed with water is poisonous for our pets.

**Holiday treats are yummy and everyone loves to indulge… including our pets sometimes. However, limit the amount of bites you give them and make sure gum and other treats are not accessible to dogs. Stockings need to be monitored around pets, particularly. There is usually chocolate/ gum, etc… in a stocking.

Just a few tips to keep our furry friends SAFE this holiday season!!

Merry Christmas everyone!!

Until next time,
