Can my dog get the flu from me?

This is flu season and the flu is going around. I was worried about Miss Molly getting the flu because we were exposed, so I looked into this. This is what I found:

Although there is some controversy on this subject, some vets do say that our dog’s CAN contract the human flu virus; however, there is a low risk of them contracting it. If you have the flu, don’t kiss your dog.

Is there a dog flu?

Yes, there is and dog’s are not immune to it. Dog flu is called Canine influenza A H3N2 virus. It first started in 2015 and according to research has affected dogs in every state. It is, however, a different strain of flu than humans have.

How does my dog contact dog flu?

Dogs contact the dog flu in the same manner that people spread the flu- by close contact with other dogs that have the flu. It can be spread when dog’s bark at each other or when they cough. Dogs who spend time in kennels, at dog parks or at boarding kennels are at a higher risk for catching the flu.

If your dog has the flu, keep him away from other dog’s for at least two weeks or until you are sure he is over it. Dog flu is VERY contagious to other dog’s.

What are dog flu symptoms?

Symptoms of dog flu are: a persistent cough, sneezing, lethargy, trouble breathing, a fever, no appetite and discharge from the nose. NOTE: not all dogs will show symptoms of the flu!!

If your dog is showing symptoms of the flu, it’s a good idea to take him to your vet and have him tested. If the test is positive, your vet may want to give him an antibiotic to help with the infection.

According to veterinarians, dog flu is “a serious illness,” but most dogs will recover with good nutrition and rest.

How long does dog flu last?

It depends on what type or strain of flu your dog has contracted. A mild flu can last up to 30 days and with rest and good nutrition, your dog’s immune system should be able to fight it. If your dog has a more severe flu (temperature above 104), they will need medical attention. Don’t wait if you think your dog has a fever. Be very compassionate with your dog if he has the flu- he won’t feel good and he may be worried and scared.

Can my dog catch my cold?

The answer is no. He will not catch your cold. You can snuggle with your dog and he can comfort you if you have a cold… and he won’t be affected. Our dog’s know when we don’t feel good… and he’ll want to be close to you.

But… can dog’s catch colds?

Of course!! Dog’s can catch colds… and do sometimes. Symptoms include: sneezing, runny and tearful eyes, a runny nose and lethargy. To minimize the risk of your dog catching a cold, keep him away from other dogs that are sick. I put a coat on Miss Molly during the winter months to help keep her warm when she’s outside and minimize her catching a cold. If your dog has a cold, it may be a good idea to make your vet aware of it. Your vet will probably recommend rest and good nutrition, but she may want updates of your dog’s condition also.

How do I take care of a dog with a cold or the flu?

Your dog may not understand why he feels so terrible, so offer a lot of comfort and reassurance during this time.

** Don’t push them-  If you normally take a walk and your dog acts like he wants to walk, take a short walk but watch his behavior. If he acts tired, it’s time to go home. Also, walk in a place that he won’t encounter other dogs.

**Let him get lots of rest- If your dog has the flu, he will want to sleep… uninterrupted. If his bed is usually in the living room with lots of interaction of family members, you may want to move it to a quiet room where he can rest with any interruptions.

Offer lots of water- Sometimes, when dogs are sick, they don’t feel like eating or drinking, BUT it is vital that your dog drinks. Keep fresh water in a bowl beside him. If he refuses to drink, take a syringe and put small drops of water on his tongue often to keep him hydrated and call your vet.

Keep him away from other animals- Keep your dog away from other animals for a period of time (ask your vet how long). His immune system may still be a little weak after he recovers so give him time to totally recover.

Are there any home remedies for my dog’s cold or flu?

Of course!! Here are some you can try:

** You can give your dog a little chicken broth BUT be sure and watch the salt content in the broth. This works well, especially when your dog doesn’t feel like eating. It will keep his strength up.

** If your dog is having trouble breathing, try a steam bath or shower. Take your dog in the bathroom and run hot water so it fills the room with steam. It may help with their breathing.

** If you think your dog might have a sore throat (they are coughing or sneezing a lot), try a little bit of honey. Honey has some healing benefits, but make sure it is natural honey and not filled with sugar.

**Essential Oils might be an option: Some essential oils are toxic to dogs, but there are some that are beneficial. Peppermint helps with congestion in a dog’s nose, Eucalyptus acts like a antiseptic and lavender tends to calm and reassure a dog.

We all get colds and flu’s once in a while. The most important thing you can do for your dog when he is sick is just to reassure him… and pamper him. He will recover- he just needs a little TLC like we do when we get sick.
