What if you could take your dog to work with you everyday?

There are actually some pet-friendly companies that permit dog owners to bring their dogs to work with them everyday. The reasons they allow owners to bring their pet is because it helps with stress relief and it also helps employees be more sociable during company meetings and it encourages people to socialize with other employees in the office. This trend is common with large companies, but is starting to take off with small companies too, in the last couple of years.

With these companies, you can take your furry friend with you:

*BISSELL

Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this company allows pet owners to bring their pets to work with them everyday. Bissell was founded by Cathy Bissell to promote and support spay and neuter programs and pet adoption.

*AMAZON

Amazon has allowed pet owners to bring their dogs to work from the day they first opened. Located in Seattle, Washington, the company sees up to 6,000 dogs daily that come to work with their humans. Amazon even named one of its buildings after one of the first dogs to come to the workplace.

*ZYNGA

Zynga offers dogs that come to work with their owners free treats and there is a play area on the roof of the company building in San Francisco for dogs to play with other dogs. Mark Pincus, founder of Zynga, offers dog owners pet insurance and his late bulldog is used in the company logo.

*NESTLE PURINA

Nestle allows their employees to bring their dogs to work because they think that having a dog next to their owner is de-stressing to both. They also like their employees moving around during the day, like when they take their dogs out to potty.

PROS AND CONS OF TAKING YOUR DOG TO WORK WITH YOU

PROS:

— It helps relieve stress for the owner of the dog and the dog itself. In a 2012 study, the finding revealed that dog owners that brought their dogs with them to work had lower hormonal stress levels.

— It seems nowadays everyone owns a dog and dogs can make people (employees) talk about their pets to each other. They promote interaction.

— Bringing a pet to work is definitely a perk that pet owners love and once they have this benefit, they don’t want to lose it, so the company has less turnovers from employees.

— Bringing a pet to work decreases absences because employees don’t have to worry about their pets. They can work longer hours and be more productive.

–Bringing your pet to work saves money, especially if you have a dog day care or if someone looks after your pet while you are at work.

— Having your dog with you at work tends to improve confidence, loyalty and enthusiasm. Dogs can also lighten everyone’s mood by making us laugh.

CONS:

These could be some disadvantages:

–Co-workers who are allergic to dogs: Statistics show us that 3 out of 10 people are allergic to the fur on animals so be sure your employees aren’t allergic before bringing your dog into the workplace. And, sometimes, people who don’t have dogs could be a little uncomfortable around a dog… at least until they get to know it.

–Dog fights could occur if animals don’t get along. Make sure your animal is friendly with people and dogs alike before taking him to your workplace. If not, get some training for him before integrating him with other animals.

–Does your dog bark… or snore… or whine? Is he potty trained?  Be sure your dog is well trained before taking him to work with you.

SOME TIPS FOR BRINGING YOUR DOG TO WORK WITH YOU:

*Bring one of your pets dogs beds from home, or maybe even two. Make sure your pet is comfortable and is surrounded by familiar smells to decrease his anxiety.

* Be sure you bring something for your dog to chew on and treats for him when he is awake. Giving your dog a chew toy will keep him quiet and entertained while you work.

* Don’t force your dog on anyone. Keep your dog by you and leashed to your desk and allow people to come to you to pet your dog. Don’t walk around the whole office showing everyone your dog. Some people may not like dogs.

* Make sure your dog has plenty of water readily available. Staying hydrated will decrease your dog’s stress.

* Take lots of potty breaks- probably more than normal right at first, until your dog gets used to your workplace and his new routine.

Once your dog gets used to his new routine, you’ll love having him right beside you while at work.
