How do you find the perfect name for YOUR perfect puppy??

**Look at your dog. Consider what type of breed he is and what type of personality he has. See if he has any distinguishing characteristics.

** Choose a name you like and a name that your dog responds too. When you think of a cute name, try it out for a couple of days. See how your dog responds to it and see if you like it. Ask your family members what they think of the name and get their input.

** Pick a name with one or two syllables- they are easier to say and easier for your dog to understand.

** Don’t pick a name that is a command. It will be confusing to your dog.

** Don’t name your dog something that is offensive or embarrassing … to you or anyone else.

** Don’t pick a super long name for your dog, unless you plan to give him/her a shorter nickname.

** Research names. Look up names on the internet. There are a million of them.

** If you adopt a dog or someone gives you a dog, don’t change his/her name. It confuses the dog and they don’t understand why they are being called something different.

** If you plan to name your dog after a human relative, it might be a good idea to ask that person first. You don’t want to offend anyone or make them feel bad.

** Think about fun places you’ve been or fun things you’ve done- you might come up with a cool dog name from a place or a fun experience.

**Another fun way to think of a dog name is to think of a famous celebrity that you like… or a famous athlete… or a musician that you listen too… or a famous author, or a famous animal, etc… Or, think of something that you personally like. Example: I love orca whales so I might name one of my pugs after a famous orca whale, etc…

Here’s a fun fact for you: Come up with a name you really like because you may end up saying your dog’s name more than 50,000 times in his lifetime. WOW!! A short name might be best!!

For all you trivia people out there- Do you know what the study of names is called??

Onomastics!! Yeah, I didn’t know it either.

According to recent research, picking out a name for your pet is an emotional behavior and a habit that we enjoy. People like to pick out names that make them happy. Men tend to pick out names that are bold and masculine, while women pick out names that are smooth and feminine.

One more piece of trivia: Dogs that tend to bite often have what name??

Rocky!! Yep, Rocky. Interesting, huh??

You might get the idea for a name because reminds you of a certain place, incident or item. For instance, a dog found as a stray puppy at The Home Depot might be named “Depot.” A dog born or adopted in the spring can be called “Petal” or “Blossom.” I once knew a dog named “Converse” because a Converse shoe was the first thing the puppy chewed up.

Some people like to name their dogs after famous celebrities or historical figures. For instance, a classical music lover might name a dog Brahms or Mozart. Sports fans might pick the first or last names of their favorite players. Literature enthusiasts might name a dog after a favorite author. I have met dogs named after famous actors or the memorable characters they played.

Another fun idea, if you like the idea of a theme, is to name your dog (or dogs) after something you enjoy. Wine enthusiasts might consider something like “Merlot” or “Riesling.” Scientists could name their dogs after chemical elements. One dog owner I knew was really into cheeses. She had dogs named Roquefort, Stilton and Limburger.

No matter what you name your dog, make it a name that you like and one that your dog responds well to. As long as you are pleased with the name, who really cares if it’s highly unusual or incredibly popular? After all, your dog doesn’t know the difference.

  1. That makes sense. I named Tia after my friend who had several nieces and nephews. They called her T. Since she helped me rescue her, I knew Tia was Aunt in Spanish. The rest is history. Loved this article and thank you.
