Have you ever had a birthday party for your dog?

I hadn’t… until I got a pug.

There’s just something special about having a pug that makes a person want to throw a party for them. Maybe it’s because they are little clowns… or the fact that they enjoy attention so much… or maybe it’s because they seem to appreciate the little things that you do for them. Whatever the reason, give YOUR pug a birthday party for his/her next birthday-and watch the reaction that you get!! It’s priceless!!

Here’s some tips to help you plan your pug’s party

What kind of theme will I use?

Think about your pug’s temperament and personality- What does your pug like? What toys does he/she really notice and play with? What colors suit your pug? What really gets his/her attention? Think of a theme that suit’s your pug’s personality and use that to plan the party.

Who will I invite?

You could invite anyone that your pug knows- family, friends, other pugs and /or different breeds of dogs that your pug has played with. How about your vet or someone who takes care of your pug?

 Will you send out invitations?

I haven’t actually sent out invitations for my pugs’ parties, but I know people who have. Instead of sending invitations in the mail, you could make an invitation on your computer and send it out via social media or just call people and tell them about the party.

Where will you have the party?

Think of a special place that means something to your pug- like their favorite park or maybe just in your backyard. Pick a place that they know.

What kind of decorations will I use?

Use colors and decorations that suit your pug’s personality. Make signs, use banners or streamers, blow up balloons, get party hat’s for your pugs to wear, and make or buy birthday bandanas. The birthday bandanas are fun because when the party is over, each dog will get to take their bandana home with them- they will have a keepsake of the fun day they had.

What kind of birthday cake will I make for my pug’s birthday?

I know people who actually give their dog cake, but since I’m always watching Molly’s diet, I usually make her a birthday cake out of canned dog food, and her favorite treats sprinkled on the top or beside it. Here’s a photo of her first birthday cake. Put candles on top to celebrate how old he/she is, but don’t let your pug get too close until you help them blow them out. Grocery stores DO have ice cream for dogs, so you could give the pugs all a little treat of ice cream after they have eaten a bite of cake.

**What kind of activities will I plan for the party?

Plan your activities around where you have the party. If it’s an indoor party, you could do some easy games like: a search game- hide treats around the room and let the pugs search for them OR give each pug a treat puzzle and see who finds all the treats first OR line all the dog’s up and have them do tricks. This is fun because your pug could learn some new tricks. If it’s an outdoor party, you could do an agility course. These are fairly cheap to buy and pugs love them. The adults can run alongside the pugs as they go through the course. If it’s summer and hot, get some sprinklers. Some pugs love the water and it’s fun to watch them scamper and play in it. Molly loves to play with a frisbee so that might be another fun game you could play with them.

Would a mini parade be fun?

YES!! Your pug will love it. Tie balloons and streamers on the dog’s harnesses or let them ride in wagons, strollers, etc… (if they can’t walk far) and take them for a walk. Let people know that it’s your dog’s birthday.  Have someone hold a sign that says, “Happy Birthday!” People will stop and celebrate with you. Your birthday girl or boy will get a lot of attention! They’ll feel very special!!

What will I get my pug for his/her birthday?

Literally any type of toy. A stuffed animal, a treat-dispensing toy, a chew toy, a toy that jumps around and makes funny sounds. Pugs love stimulation and they love to play. I always look in the baby section for toys for Molly- they have some cute ones.  You could also get him/her a new outfit to wear, a hat, a new bandana or even a book. Molly loves to be read too and I read to her daily. Another idea is to take your pug and his/her birthday friends to a local pet shop and let them pick out a new toy. Let them wear their balloons and streamers and take them to the store. Let each pug pick out a new toy. Molly loves this and I often take her to pick out something new. It’s fun to watch as she decides what she wants.

Anything else?

YES!! I let Molly help me make the birthday cake. I sit her on a stool or chair so she can see what I am doing. I tell her this is HER cake. Your pug will get very excited about this. Slip them a treat or two for helping you. When I got Molly’s cake done, she couldn’t hardly wait for the party. She knew it was for her.

Should I sing “Happy Birthday” to my pug?

Absolutely!! He/she will love it. I hold Molly right by the cake when we sing to her so she feels really special. They will love the attention and when you are done singing, your pug will be ready to open their presents.

Pugs are very special companions. They give us so much joy and laughter with their little clown antics and their funny personalities. Make their special day fun with a party. Take lots of photos so you’ll have special memories of this day. Believe me… when you mention “birthday” the next year, your pug will know… Most of all, just have fun. Spending the day with your birthday girl or boy is the most important thing you can do to make him/her feel special.

Until next time,

Hugs and Pug Kisses,

Candy
