How to make your home pug proof!!
Examine every room of your house
Are YOU thinking about getting a pug? Then… you need to think about making your home safe for your pug. Getting a pug puppy is like having a new baby. Pugs are naturally curious and they will explore EVERYTHING. As you begin to think about pug proofing your home, think about things that are on their level- things that are close to the floor. Examine every room of your house, even rooms your pug will not be in because these little dogs tend to follow their owners everywhere.
Watch electrical cords
Start with electrical cords. Pug puppies love to chew and they will definitely chew on an electrical cord if they find one. If you do have a cord on a floor in a pugs reach, tape the cord to the floor so the pug cannot get to it. If you cannot tape the cord to the floor, put tape around the cord to discourage chewing or move the cord where your pug does not have access to it. If your pug chews through a cord, he could get shocked, which could cause him/her to go into cardiac arrest. It is vital to monitor your pug closely to make sure they are not chewing on any type of cords.
This is not a good senerio for pugs.
Houseplants can be hazardous
Houseplants are another danger to your pug. Since pugs love to chew, they tend to want to chew on the leaves of houseplants. Some plants are safe, but a lot of plants are toxic to dogs and pugs tend to have allergic reactions to some houseplants. It is best to keep all types of plants high where your pug has no access to them. Remember though, that pugs will climb so keep that in mind.
Cleaners should be out of reach
Another area of danger to your pug is any type of cleaners or medications. If you have these at a low level, move them or put a lock on the cabinet they are in. You may think a bottle is safe since it has a lid on, but a pug will play with, chew on and roll bottles around and there is a chance a lid may come off. DON’T TAKE THAT CHANCE. Err on the side of caution because a pug’s curiosity can sometimes get them in trouble.
A pug’s nose can get them in trouble
A pugs nose is way more sensitive than a human’s nose and they tend to sniff out interesting things, so be aware of that and make sure everything is safe. Two things to really watch for that can fatally harm your pug is gum and chocolate… and your pug will be able to smell both. I had a pug when I was younger and she loved to dig around in our Christmas stockings and find gum that our parents had given us for Christmas. Gum didn’t used to be toxic, but recently, it is being made with Xylitol. Small amounts of this ingredient can cause low blood sugar, seizures, liver failure and/or death in dogs. Chocolate (or theobromine) can make your pug very sick or even be fatal for them. Dogs have died from theobromine doses as low as 115 milligrams per two pounds of body weight (this means 20 ounces of milk chocolate, 10 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate or 2.25 ounces of baking chocolate) so keep all forms of chocolate out of reach of your pug.
Clean your floors often
Also, pugs will literally pick ANYTHING off of the floor and eat it so be sure to check your floors often. My mom has a pug that loves to eat paper, so she has to keep paper off of the floor. Pugs do not even really look at what they are eating… they just pick it up and eat it, so you have to watch what is on your floors for them.
Also, if you have to leave your pug for long periods of time, be sure he/she is in a secure, safe place in your home.
Areas in your home that should be checked often:
Kitchen (keep floors clean and swept)
Garage (make sure your pug doesn’t have access to your garage or that it is pug proof)
Bathroom (make sure cleaners are put up and pug can’t get cabinets open)
Living Room/Den (make sure cords are not accessible and no plants are reachable)
Yard (make sure your yard is free from anything that will harm your pug)
Keeping your floors clean and your house pug proof helps ensure that your pug will live a long, healthy and safe life.
Until next time,
