Traveling with your Pug

Since Molly and I are getting ready to go to Arkansas on vacation, it made me think about what I need to take with me for her to be comfortable. Dogs need things too. They need to be comfortable so they can have a great vacation too. It is NOT acceptable to take a dog on vacation and keep them in a kennel the whole time. You have fun on vacation… Let your dog enjoy it with you.

Here are some things to think about as you take your pug on vacation with you:

*As you are getting things ready for vacation and you are running errands, either leave your pug at home where it is cool or take them in the stores with you.

DO NOT leave your pug in a hot vehicle!! Everyone knows this… and yet we still hear about it happening. Pugs don’t breathe well anyway when it’s hot… and especially not in a hot vehicle.

*Get your pug used to riding in your car BEFORE going on vacation.

If you never take them for a ride, don’t expect them to behave when you take them on vacation. I take Molly for at least one ride a day. She knows where to sit, how to sit and how to behave in a car. Teach your pug how to ride. Also, pugs LOVE to ride. They like to look out the window and they enjoy riding… so take your pug for a daily ride.

*When going on vacation, bring your dog’s blanket and some toys for him/her in the car.

It makes them feel safe and happy to have some of their things along with them.

*Make sure your dog is secure: The safest way to transport a dog is in a crate that is secured with a seatbelt.

There are also dog restraints and dog seat belts that you can use to keep your pug safe. Here’s a dog car booster seat that works great!!

* Make sure you map out your trip and plan out places that you can stop and give your dog a break.

They will need to stretch their legs after riding for a while. When taking a break, play with them, let them run a bit and give them a drink of water.

* Train your pug to “stay” until you tell him/her to get out of the car.

Jumping out of the car without you knowing is dangerous for your pug.

* Keep your pug’s head INSIDE the car!!

My pug sits at the window sometimes, but I don’t usually let her get too far outside the window… unless I’m stopped somewhere.

* Keep food to a minimum before traveling with your pet so they won’t get car sick and throw up.

* Don’t forget a first aid kit:

What should be in it?? Gauze pads, Gauze rolls, bandages, cotton swabs, instant cold pack, wash cloths, tweezers, thermometer, Hydrogen Peroxide, Antibiotic Ointment, bug spray, plastic gloves, scissors, mild pet sedatives, eyedroppers, and bottled water. Here is a veterinary approved first-aid kit that is perfect for traveling:
