Don’t Lie to Sleeping Dogs

We all tell fibs from time to time.

Research shows the average person lies about two times a day. Not too bad. This suggests most people are generally honest.

But don’t try lying to your dog. Chances are, they will catch you.

A recent study indicated that dogs may be able to know when their humans are lying to them. They seem to pick up on deceptive suggestions and react differently to information given by a human who is lying to them.

Why would we lie to our pets? Isn’t that wrong?

Not so fast.

When we ask in a pleasant voice “Wanna go for a ride?” and secretly it’s a trip to the veterinarian, this is harmless lie for their benefit. Cat owners know their felines seem to have a sixth sense about water. The best way to give a cat a bath is often to have the water ready, pet them nicely, then spring the trap. (Unless you want your arms to get clawed to death.)

Truth is, when you live with pets, a little deception is necessary from time to time.

Just don’t think you can push it too far. Dogs are smarter than you think.

A recent experiment showed that dogs not only recognize their owners by their faces and smell, but by the sound of their voices as well.

Hungarian researchers set up a hide-and-seek game that tasked to dogs to find their owners hiding among strangers. The dogs could hear their hiding owner’s voice and a hiding stranger’s voice reading a recipe in a neutral tone. The dogs were prevented from relying on sight or smell.

Were the dogs able to find their masters? You bet – 82 percent of the time!

This shows that if you lie to your dog, you better remember they are listening to sound of your voice, not just the words coming out of your mouth.

It turns out, a dog’s nose is pretty good at sniffing out B.S.!

Until next time,
