An ongoing study into the lifespan of dogs may challenge the conventional wisdom that “dog years” are equal to seven “human years.”

According to ScienceDaily, researchers at Princeton University are on a quest to better understand how dogs age. The Dog Aging Project has collected data from more than 32,000 dogs of various breeds and sizes for the past four years.

Despite being “Man’s Best Friend,” we apparently know little of what constitutes “normal” aging in dogs. We do know that big dogs tend to age faster than small dogs. But to boil it down to “one equals seven” is an oversimplification.

Scientists are examining the genetics of particularly long-lived dogs to see if a link exists between genes and longevity. They are sequencing the genomes of 10,000 dogs, according to ScienceDaily.

So the next time you call your 10-year-old Yorkie a “Grand Old Lady”- think again. She just might be younger than you think.
