The hot summer days are here! We all love them- it is time to relax, go boating, go swimming, etc… Our dogs love to be outside too, but in this heat, brachycephalic dogs have a hard time cooling themselves off because of their short noses. A brachycephalic dog’s airway kind of resembles a tight maze, so they don’t get as much air in their lungs when they breath like a non-brachycephalic dog does.
Also, they have another disadvantage. The soft palates in the back of their throats sometimes tend to block some of the air that comes in to their trachea, which means they have to work harder to get sufficient oxygen to their lungs.
Should a Brachycephalic dog stay inside?
Does that mean that your pug or brachycephalic dog has to stay inside constantly. NO!! You just need to be careful WHEN they do outside and how long they stay out.
Morning and evening are best
Morning and evenings are best for brachycephalic dogs because they are not in the hot, direct sunshine. The humidity might still be high, though, so be aware of that. Just watch your dog- you can tell when he’s getting too hot. If his tongue is hanging out of his mouth and he’s breathing harder than normal, it’s time to go in.
