Why is my pug scared during a thunderstorm?

It’s that time again- Thunderstorm season!

Pugs (dogs) can be scared of thunderstorms for lots of different reasons. If your Pug (dog) has anxiety, a thunderstorm is just going to increase the anxiety.

A thunderstorm is usually accompanied by flashes of light, loud noises and possibly even lots of wind. The noise or the flash of lights could scare your pug (dog). Pugs (dogs) can hear much higher and lower frequencies than humans can. A young person can usually hear up to about 20,000 Hz. Dogs can hear to 45,000 Hz.

How do I keep my dog calm during a thunderstorm?

-If your pug gets anxiety or stressed during a thunderstorm, it’s very important for you to stay calm. Our pugs (dogs) gets more anxious if we are anxious. Stay calm and relaxed and talk to your dog with a calm voice. Here are some suggestions:

– Don’t punish him or scold him for reacting to the storm. Remember, he’s not acting not acting out because of disobedience- he’s acting out because of his fear of the storm.

-Distract him- Even though his focus may be on the noise of the storm, try to distract him by playing with him or offering him some treats. Play some music or turn on the television so the noise of the storm won’t be quite as prevalent. Sometimes, I run a fan too that is close to my pug’s bed. The noise of the fan helps lessen the noise of the thunderstorm. Also, close your shades or curtains so the flashes of lightning aren’t so bright.*

-Give your dog a safe place to rest during a storm. If his bed is near a window, move it to an interior space that is not near a window. Put a blanket over his kennel if using a kennel or if using a dog bed, make sure some of his favorite toys are in it. A low-heating heating pad may also comfort your dog during a storm. Put a chew toy in his bed so he has something to distract him during the storm. Also, try putting one of your shirts in his bed- the smell of you on the shirt helps calm an upset dog. If you are home, just let your pug lay in your lap- Sometimes, the most comforting place a pug can lay is in his owner’s lap during a storm.

-Try a grooming session during a thunderstorm. There is nothing a pug likes more than a belly rub so try rubbing their belly or brushing your pug’s hair during a storm. It’s a great option for relaxing your pug.
