You should always consult your vet before adding fish oil or any type of supplement to your dog’s diet. Fish Oil is high in Omega-3 fatty acids so your vet can help you decide whether your dog needs to take it long term or whether it should just be a occasional dietary boost.

Do Dog’s naturally produce Fish Oil?

Dogs do not produce fish Oil on their own so they must depend on their diet to get Omega-3 fatty acids.

Omega -3 balances out Omega-6 fatty acids that are often found in processed foods and grains. Companies who produce dry dog foods often use meat that comes from corn fed animals (high in Omega-6), which in turn puts more Omega-6 fats in your dogs diet than they need. Although dogs do need both Omega-3 fats and Omega-6 in their diet, the fats need to be balanced.

Store your fish oil in your refrigerator. It needs to be protected from heat, light and air. Make sure to watch the dates on the fish oil bottle and check often to make sure it smells good (fish oil can become rancid since it is susceptible to oxidation).

Don’t give your dog the dosage on the fish oil bottle. Instead, ask your vet how much oil your dog should get based on your dogs health, weight, size and age.
