Does your pug/dog like ice cream?

A Vermont ice cream company, Ben & Jerry’s is adding a line of frozen dog treats to its food line. The dog treats will be available later this month in grocery stores and pet stores.

The doggie treats will be sold in 4-ounce cups and will be available in two different flavors: pumpkin with cookies and peanut butter with pretzels.

The company decided this might be the time to expand and target pet owners because the number of U.S. households that have pets went up 6.5% between 2015 and 2020 with 84.9 million Americans being pet owners.

The pet treats are made with sunflower butter.

Is Sunflower Butter safe for your dog?

Recent studies have shown that sunflower butter can reduce inflammation. Inflammation can lead to cancer, heart disease and arthritis in dogs.

Sunflower Butter is made from nutty tasting sunflower seeds and has actually been around since the 1980’s. It only has 93 calories and is a good option for people who have allergies to nuts. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, sunflower butter has more unsaturated fat, magnesium, zinc, iron, and Vitamin E than Peanut Butter and just a teaspoon a day provides 24 percent of our body’s daily needs.

A Better Option for pet’s with food allergies

Does your pet suffer from teary eye stains, super smelly paws and ears, or skin irritations? Sunflower Butter has proven to be more healing for pets who suffer with allergies than peanut butter.

Peanut Butter is a popular treat for pets, but it can be toxic. Some peanut butters have added salt, sugar, or artificial sweeteners such as Xylitol. Xylitol is toxic to dogs so be sure and read labels if giving your pet peanut butter. Also, peanut butter belongs to the legume family, which means that the peanuts grow underground and can be susceptible to a mold called Aspergillus. Aspergillus has aflatoxins that grow in the soil and decay vegetation, hay and grains- this can affect your pet’s allergies.
