This lovable pug with a fascination for digging is a cherished companion of Tammy Downs of Glenrock, Wyoming.

Tammy purchased Hamlet from a pug breeder in Iowa. She said they call him Hammy or Hamster for his nicknames.

Hamlet, now five months old, sleeps by Tammy’s feet or under the covers with her. She said he can be a bed hog at times. Hamlet loves to go on vacation and has been to the South Dakota Black Hills and to Minnesota. Tammy said everywhere they go, Hamlet is the star of the show.

Hamlet likes to have his photo taken. Tammy said he is very photogenic and will sit and pose for the camera. Tammy said she did not choose a pug — a pug chose her. She loves this breed because they are the most loving and loyal of dogs, and are all unique in their own way.

Kennel trained and loves his walks

Hamlet is kennel trained. Tammy said he stays in his kennel when they are not home and she puts a litter box in it in case he needs to go potty. She said she starts all of her puppies with litter box training and then it is easy to get them to potty outside. Hamlet has lots of toys, water and food so he is well equipped when they are away.

Hamlet is a very social puppy and gets along well with others. He will roll over for anyone who is willing to rub his belly. He likes to bark at anyone who comes in his house or at the yard when he is sitting halfway out of his doggy door. Hamlet also spends his time barking at rafters who are floating down the river by his house. Tammy talks to Hamlet constantly and she thinks that he understands what she says.

Hamlet and Tammy walk everyday. His favorite place to walk is anywhere there is thick grass so he can roll in it. Hamlet does stay home when Tammy is gone, but she says that he is a good boy and he has his brother and sister to keep him company.

Staying healthy with supplements and bones

Hamlet eats Nutrena Loyall and Tammy also gives her pugs a vitamin supplement called NuVet Plus and Nu-joint Plus. His favorite treats are bully sticks, pig ears and deer horns. Tammy buys them at Murdoch’s and finds deer antler sheds and cuts them up for Hamlet. She noted that they last a long time.

Hamlet is a good eater and is not overweight. Tammy brushes his teeth when she gives him a bath. She uses the wash cloth and rubs his teeth. She also gives him teeth cleaning toys and bones to help keep his teeth clean. Hamlet wears only a harness because Tammy said it is hard on a pug’s throat to lead them with a collar. She doesn’t have a favorite brand of harness, but prefers the harnesses that fit like a jacket.

No health issues but loves to fetch

Hamlet does not currently have any health issues. His favorite toy is a ball that he stole from his older sister. He also likes to play “chase me” and dig in the back yard. Tammy said sometimes he digs a hole so deep that she believes his goal is to get to Tibet or China to visit his original heritage.

Tammy said they try to prolong their pugs’ lives by feeding them NuVet and giving them NuJoint vita supplements. They also have regular visits to the vet and are kept up-to-date on all vaccinations and deworming medications. She said they love their vet because they are friendly and good with her pugs.

Tammy’s advice for those considering a pug as a pet: “Please be careful of scams. There are so many out there right now,” said Tammy. “Ask for references before you send money. A reputable breeder will provide you with references.”
