How Does Your Pug Act When Guests Arrive? Here’s Some Helpful Tips…

At times, we all have guests in our homes. Does your dog bark and jump or become aggressive? Does your dog want attention from your guests? Is your dog afraid of people when they come to your home? Does he run and hide?

We need to observe our dog’s behavior when guests show up at our home. Why? So we can train him if we need too to behave like we want them to behave.

Here are some tips:

** Not everyone is a dog lover. Some people are allergic to dogs or to dog hair. My mom has a pug, but she hates to get dog hair on her. She goes to extremes to keep the dog hair to a minimum. People who visit your home may not want your pug to jump up on them or to even get near them. That’s tough with a pug. They are a lap dog. It is important to keep your pug on the floor when people are visiting… and that takes some training.

** Make sure when your guests arrive that your dog is not barking or doesn’t jump on them when they walk in. I almost always pick my pug (Miss Molly) up and hold her because of course, she thinks my guests are there to see her. After a few minutes, I let her go see them, but also make her stay down.

** It doesn’t hurt to ask your guests if they are ok with a dog being in the same room. They will tell you. If they are allergic or have a fear of a dog, take your dog in a different room until the guests leave.

** If your guests do not like dogs, do not spend your time with them telling them dog stories. They won’t care. If your guests do love dogs, you still should minimize how many dog stories you tell.

** Make sure your guests know that you have a dog before they arrive… that way there are no surprises.

** If your dog is aggressive, make sure he is kept away from your guests.

** If your guests has children, make sure your dog is friendly with children before allowing the kids to pet him. Keep a close eye on the interaction because small children tend to grab a dog instead of just petting him… and your dog may react to this.

** If your dog is allowed on the furniture, vacuum the furniture and floor before your guests arrive so dog hair is not visible.

** Give your pug direct demands when guests arrive, like “sit,” “stay,” “down,” and “lie down.” Have treats readily available to give them for good behavior. If your pug does not listen, take him in a different room and let him calm down before letting him interact with your guests again.
