Have an Inside Dog?? Here’s Some Tips for Keeping Your House in Tip Top Shape

I’m a pug momma and I know a lot of you own pugs too. Here are some tips that I do that will help with keeping your house clean and smelling good.

** Invest in a good vacuum.  This would be my #1 tip (especially for dogs that shed, like pugs). I vacuum everyday. Pugs shed a lot, certain times of the year worse than others. Investing in a good vacuum is essential. It’s easy to keep the dog hair under control if you have a good vacuum and you use it. Robot vacuums are expensive, but they are very nice. They help a lot to keep the dog hair under control.

**Brush your dog (often). I brush Molly probably 4-5 times a week. I have a furminator brush (which I love, by the way). I use several different brushes on her, but end with the furminator. It gets all the loose hair out and she doesn’t shed as much that way. I brush her outside on my deck, NOT INSIDE. If you have to brush your dog inside, be sure to lay a sheet down that you can take and shake out when you are finished.

** Clean your carpets periodically. Carpets, just like anything else, need cleaned once in a while, especially if you have pets. If you don’t have or can’t rent a carpet machine, then have a carpet service come and clean your carpets. I had mine cleaned not too long ago, and it smelled so nice. Molly noticed too… and of course, wanted to roll all over the clean floors. LOL!!

** Give your dog a bath often. There is a lot of controversy on this subject and some vets tell you to bathe your dog only once a month. I give Molly a bath weekly. I use Dawn dish soap in the summer to ward off any bugs or fleas that might get on her, then I moisturize her skin with an aloe vera spray from Petco. Her fur and skin look wonderful!! She loves a bath and looks forward to it.

** If you have fabric furniture, you might consider switching to leather, especially if you allow your pets on the furniture. Leather is a lot easier to clean and to keep clean and it doesn’t seem to retain smells like fabric does. Wash your leather with a solution of mild bleach and water.

** Clean up after dogs get a treat. Dogs tend to take their treats, run and eat them… anywhere they like. Sometimes, they hide them. If your dog just drops his/her treat anywhere and eats it (like Molly does), they tend to leave crumbs on the floor or the carpet. Be sure and wipe these spots up after your dog is done so the crumbs don’t attract ants (especially in the summer).

**Clean your dogs toys often!! Toys get dirty too… just like anything else. Cleaning your dog’s toys not only helps with odors, but it keeps your dog from getting sick too. I clean Molly’s plastic toys with a mild solution of bleach and water. The stuffed animals I wash. Be careful what laundry soap you use on dog toys. I usually use baby laundry soap or one with no dyes or perfumes.

**Keep lint rollers handy. I do this mostly for people who visit. The dog hair doesn’t bother me much… I’m used to it (I just brush it off) but some people don’t like it. I keep a lint roller handy for those times.

**Try to keep your dog’s bowls in an area that is not carpeted. It’s so much easier to keep clean, especially when your dog spills water or food.  Molly has a tendency to throw part of her food out of her bowl when she eats, so it’s nice to have it on linoleum so I can just sweep up whatever is left on  the floor.

**Dog Beds are wonderful, but be choosy when deciding on one. Some dog beds are made out of material that hair tends to stick too. One idea for helping with this problem is to make a cover for the bed with a soft cotton material that is comfortable and that you can wash often). This helps with odors and helps the dog bed last longer. If you make several covers, you can change them out often.

**Use a mixture of bleach and water to clean floors or clean up messes. This mixture (very mild) will clean your floors and keep your house smelling clean and fresh. Be sure to wipe down all the counters, furniture, etc… This mixture will work for just about everything!!

**Open your windows whenever possible and let fresh air circulate through your house. I also run a fan, even with my windows open. It will make your house smell fresh and if it’s nice outside, your dog will love the fresh air too.

** Be sure to wash bedding often, especially if your pet sleeps with you (and sheds). I love sleeping with Molly, but she does shed so washing my sheets often is a must.
