Move Over Men! Studies Show That Women Get Better Sleep Next to their Dogs

A recent study that was published by researchers at Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y, showed that women get more rest when they sleep next to their dogs than when sleeping beside a human partner.

So, if you are wondering if purchasing a dog will keep you awake at night, the answer is “no.” You’ll probably sleep better.

According to the study, a dog is not only a man’s best friend, but also a women’s – especially  at night or when taking a nap.

But why? As a journalist, I always have to ask this question.

More than 900 women participated in the study and they indicated that a dog made them feel more secure and offered more comfort than a human partner did. The reason for this is most likely because dogs are known for their ability to protect their owners and warn us of any potential danger.

Another possible reason that women sleep better next to their dogs is because dogs have a low nocturnal activity level and usually sleep all night, unlike a cat or a human partner.

The study also found that sleeping with a cat is just like sleeping with a human partner because they tend to wake up several times a night.

“Dog ownership and its associated responsibilities may cause individuals to adhere to a stricter routine,” researchers said. “Keeping to a consistent sleep schedule may be beneficial to dog owners.”

BUT is it a good idea to let your dog sleep with you?

According to the Mayo clinic, sleeping with your dog is perfectly safe, as long as you both are healthy. The study at Mayo clinic actually said that sleeping with your dog may improve your sleep.

Here are some benefits of sleeping with your furry friend:

  • It’s comforting knowing that you have protection.
  • It helps your dog with separation anxiety, especially if you are away from him or her for long hours while at work.
  • It provides a sense of security
  • It’s warm and comforting to sleep next to a dog.
  • It strengthens the bond you have with your dog.
  • It’s comforting if you live alone.
  • It’s a great benefit for your dog and they will enjoy it as much as their owners.

“Sleeping with your pet is an important ritual for many people,” said Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, a staff doctor at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, who specializes in small animal internal medicine and oncology. “It doesn’t need to be avoided if both pet and owner are healthy.”

Does allowing a dog on your bed cause behavioral problems?

“No,” said Russell Hartstein, certified dog behavior consultant and professional trainer. He said despite what dog owners have heard, the aggression is often caused by fear and is not caused by allowing a dog on the bed or furniture.

Hartstein says that as long as the owners don’t mind pet hair on their furniture and they are comfortable sleeping with a pet in their bed, the dog will enjoy the bed as much as his owner’s do.

“Pets love their parents and are drawn to their scents,” he says. “They also prefer sleeping on elevated spaces.”
