December is here, the cooler air is blowing in.  The leaves have dropped from the trees, the green grass and flowers have gone dormant. The winter coats have come out of the closets, we are hunting for our gloves, boots and hats, and heaters have been turned on because…

This time of year is magical. People think of other people, they give to the needy, they visit the elderly and people in hospitals, they give coats to the homeless, they spend time with their families. The month of December makes us nostalgic. We think of people and pets that are no longer with us and relive memories of past times. We talk about memories of our childhood and tell our friends, children and grandchildren what it was like back then. We long for times and people that can no longer be with us. And yet, we realize that they are still with us… watching over us… and longing for those times too. We wipe our tears and remember the happy times. We laugh, we light candles for our loved ones, we reminisce and we realize…

Christmas trees go up, ornaments come out of the closet and are hung on the tree, christmas music starts playing… in homes, in stores, even on the streets. Colorful lights and sounds generate excitement. Wreaths are hung on doors and stockings on mantles and fireplaces. Christmas pillows and quilts are placed around rooms. Smells of  evergreen garlands, warm apple and cinnamon pie fill the air. The first slurp of warm eggnog warms our stomach and our hearts. Fresh cookies are baking in the oven for the holiday’s festivities.  The crackling of a cozy fireplace and the smells of burning wood fills our homes and sips of a cinnamon spiced mulled wine puts us in a holiday mood. A soft snow falls from the sky and we realize…

What is Christmas really about? Is it a time of fun and presents and the colors red and green? Is it an excuse to shop excessively and cook all kinds of foods that we don’t normally eat? Is it about decorating our houses with garlands and ornaments and poinsettias?  Is it about reindeer landing on a rooftop and a fat, jolly man sliding down our chimneys? What do we tell our children? We tell them (Santa)…

Where do we tell them the presents come from? We decorate our trees, we make cookies and milk, we leave them sitting on a plate and we go to bed because…

I love Santa and the fictional character of him as much as anyone, but let’s not forget what Christmas is really  about. Mary, heavy with child, rode on a donkey to Bethlehem and knew she was about to give birth to baby Jesus and Joseph couldn’t find her a room. Remember that God sent Jesus down to earth to give us hope for salvation and to save man from his sins. Baby Jesus was born in a stable, with animals and hay, the soft braying sounds of the donkey, and the bleating sounds of the sheep. He was born on a quiet night as the shepherds followed the…

Let us not forget that baby Jesus being born on that Christmas night is the reason we celebrate Christmas today. Let us give to other people because of baby Jesus, let us celebrate the memories of those we loved and will get to see again one day because of baby Jesus. Let us be grateful for what God has given us because of baby Jesus, Let us be thankful because of baby Jesus. Let us worship him and …

This Christmas season, as you decorate, and as you bake and as you spend time with family, and as you bless other people, do it because of the gifts that God has given to you and…
